Diwaan-e-Mo’in: Ghazal 29

This is a complete ghazal attributed to Khwâja Mu’înuddîn Chishtî:

Ay ki andar ‘ain paidâ’î nihâni kîstî
Har chi dar fahm u gumân âyad na ânî kîstî

Who are You, Who are both clearly manifest and hidden?
You, Whose existence is beyond intellect and imagination?

Jumla-yi-ashyâ zi hadd-i-wasf shud ma’lûm-i-khalq
Ay ki bîrûn az hadd-i-wasf-i-bayânî kîstî

All things are distinguished in creation by the extent of their definitions.
Who are You, Whose description is beyond any limitation?

Ay ki dar har mazhar-i-naw’î zuhûrî karda’i
Dar libâs-i-hajla ‘ayân ‘iyânî kîstî

Who are, Who manifest Yourself in each kind of place,
Whose eyes are manifest behind the curtain of the bridal chamber?

Nai badan az tu khabar dârad na jân az tu asar
Tu chu jân az bas ki paidâ’i nihânî kîstî

The body is not aware of You; the soul has received no sign of You.
Who are You, so very much hidden, when discovered by the soul?

Ay ki hamchûn shahd u shîr andar rag-i-jânî rawân
Jân-i-shîrîn manî bâ jân-i-jânî kîstî

O You, Who are flowing through the veins of my body like milk and honey;
Who are You, giving sweetness to my soul from the Soul of all souls?

Muzhda bî-sam’ u bî-nutaq ba-‘âlam dar zadî
Ay ki sam’ u nutaq har gosh u zabânî kîstî

You have brought into our world unheard and silent joyful tidings.
Who are You, Who are the hearing of each ear and the speech of each tongue?

Jumla-i-zarrât-i-jahân har yak nishân-zât-i-tu-st
Bâ wujûd-i-în nishânhâ bî nishânî kîstî

Every atom in this world is a sign pointing to Your essence.
Who are You, Who are without any sign in spite of all these signs?

Dar firâq âzâr-i-resh dardmandânî wa lek
Dar wisâl ârâm-i-jân în ‘âshiqânî kîstî

In separation with You there is the pain of the wound of grief,
But Who are You, Who in union fills the soul with peace and this love?

Jâm-i-shash rûy-i-jahân az ‘aks-i-rûyat rawshan-ast
Tu birûn az shash suwî-i-kawn u makânî kîstî

The six-sided cup of the world gets illuminated from the reflexion of Your Face.
Who are You, Who are beyond the six directions of both worlds?

Man ba-just-u-juy-i-tû har dam rawam dîwâna wâr
Wai ‘ajab har sû rawam bâ man rawânî kîstî

In my quest to find You I have been running like a fool all the time.
Who are You, Who, strangely enough, everywhere has been running with me?

Bâ Mu’înî goft har sû tâ ba kai khâhî dawîd
Ham zi khud jû har chi khâhi tâ bidânî kîstî

He told Mu’in: ‘Why do you wish to run in all directions?
Search in yourself and you’ll know the answer to who are You?’
